The New York Giants never gathered any momentum this season offensively as they ranked 26th in total offense this year and 29th the season before. All this after making the playoffs in the 2022 season and winning a playoff game. They chose to pay Daniel Jones an extension after that season and the following offseason they lost all-pro running back Saquon Barkley to division rival, Philadelphia Eagles. Danny, coming off of injury, struggled mightily this season as he only threw 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions before the team benched and then eventually released him.
The Giants' defense was middle of the pack but much better than the offense, ranking 17th and 7th in passing defense. Dexter Lawrence is leading the team in sacks with 9 thus far in the season. This team struggled to generate turnovers, as they only had one interception on the year. They give up 23.3 points per game, good enough for 18th.
Brian Daboll won coach of the year in his first year coaching the Giants in 2022. They made the playoffs and beat the Vikings in the wildcard round. But since then, he hasn’t been back or able to duplicate the team's success winning 6 games in 2023. With 5 games left they are 2-10 and the first team eliminated from postseason contention.
What Do They Need?
The New York Giants tried to make Daniel Jones the franchise QB after winning in the playoffs in 2022. The Giants gave him a four-year contract worth 160 million. 82 million was guaranteed. But come 2024 after an injured 2023 campaign and continuing to struggle the Giants benched and eventually parted ways in November. So clearly, the number one need for the Giants this season is quarterback. You have your pick of the litter at the top of the draft. With this not picked to be a deep quarterback class I would most definitely use my number one pick on one. I will be breaking down quarterbacks later on but for now I would say Cam Ward out of Miami or Shedeur Sanders out of Colorado should be picked by the Giants.
I would think the next need would come to the defensive side of the ball. So day 2 I expect them to add a pass rusher or defensive lineman. Dexter Lawrence is the best defensive tackle in the league or in the short conversation, either he or Chris Jones. But he could use some assistance with rushing the passer. First-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux has been inconsistent and the writing on the wall may signal his time is coming to an end with New York. They may want to pair Kayvon up with LT Overton out of Alabama or Jack Sawyer coming out of Ohio State. Both of these outside linebackers should add pop coming off the edge to solidify this defense even more.
You may also look to add depth on this offensive line that has been slowly getting better. You also want to add a playmaker at the corner.
The Giants have a long climb back up to the top of the division again and making the playoffs. They will start in free agency but they absolutely need to nail this draft and knock it out of the park in April!
